Here’s a bit about my story:
When I first found yoga, I was all about the exercise aspect of it. I had spent most of my adolescent and young adult life battling with a really poor body image. I was constantly judging myself against the models in Cosmo feeling like I would never be thin enough. I started with hot yoga because I wanted to sweat off the pounds (not that I was ever fat). I approached my practice with a very forceful punishing nature, taking at least one hot class a day if not two.
After a while the practice of yoga started to weave its way into my everyday life. I started to notice how strong and capable my body was instead of focusing on my “flaws”. I started to heal my self image and for the first time, start to appreciate and fall in love with myself. It was pretty profound.
After becoming a yoga teacher, I still had quite a bit of that striving yang energy inside. It wasn’t until I was in a car accident that my perspective completely shifted. I broke 3 vertebrae in my back and I wasn’t able to do ANYTHING! I had to have emergency spinal fusion surgery. The doctors told me it would be a long road. I would have good days and bad days and may never be able to do my full practice again. I was to expect a lot of pain ahead.
I was so grateful for my years of training up until that point. I knew differently. I knew how powerful the mind-body connection was! I decided to use everything I knew to my advantage. Slowly but surely, I was able to use the magic of yoga and meditation to heal myself 100%!
All I could do at first was sit in a chair. It was incredibly difficult to sit upright. I had no idea how much I needed my core an my spine to do every single little move! I’d close my eyes, slow down my breath and focus my attention on the place that was broken. I imagined sparkles flowing to T12-L3. Yogis have known for thousands of years that where you send your attention is where you send your energy. I visualized my spine repairing itself and eventually I was able to sit on the floor.
I continued to use meditation and visualization as I started to be able to practice Yin and Restorative Yoga. These styles are both mainly on the ground and involve long held stretches. Yin helped me to release really tight scar tissue and allow it to form more linear patterns. I was able to slowly release the gripping and protecting of these deep dense layers. Restorative Yoga helped me calm my nervous system so my body was able to slip into a state of repair.
Once my doctor gave me the ok, much to his surprise, I was able to get back into my regular active practice of Hatha and Vinyasa after only 4 months! Of course things were rocky and stiff at first but I kept showing up. I could feel myself getting stronger and healthier every single day. I was back to doing everything I had been doing before the accident. My Chiro and physical therapist couldn’t believe it!
Now my approach to practice is much different and this is what I love to share with my students. We can use stillness, gentleness, and quietness to calm our nervous systems. Our bodies are incredibly capable of healing themselves if we can just provide the right space and get out of our own way. We can use yoga and meditation to heal on a cellular level. I know this is true because I was able to do it to myself!
Although my case is extreme, it has solidified my belief in the power and wisdom of regular yoga practice. I have used it to heal myself from many things over the arch of my journey and I truly believe in it’s magic. I know you can YOU can use yoga to heal yourself too and I am so excited to share what I’ve learned with you!
